Our story, values, and the people working to make Canadian cities smarter
Prairie-osprey began in 2018 when a group of urban planners, software engineers, and civic engagement specialists recognized a gap in the Canadian market. Municipalities wanted to modernize their infrastructure, but most available solutions came from overseas vendors unfamiliar with Canadian regulations, climate challenges, and community expectations.
We set out to build something different. A company that understood the specific needs of Canadian cities. One that could navigate both the technical complexities of IoT systems and the political realities of municipal procurement.
Six years later, we have partnered with communities across six provinces, from small towns in the Prairies to major metropolitan centres. Each project has taught us something new about what works and what does not in real-world urban technology deployment.
Principles that guide every decision we make
We pursue technology that solves real problems, not innovations for their own sake. If a simpler solution works, we recommend it.
Every system we build serves people. We involve residents in the design process and measure success by improvements in daily life.
Urban technology should reduce environmental impact, not increase it. We prioritize energy efficiency and sustainable materials in every project.
We share our methodologies, explain our recommendations honestly, and build systems that municipalities can manage independently.
We do not believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every municipality has unique characteristics: different climates, demographics, existing infrastructure, and budget constraints. What works in Vancouver may not translate directly to Saskatoon.
Our process begins with extensive assessment. We study traffic patterns, energy consumption data, citizen feedback, and infrastructure conditions. We meet with department heads, front-line workers, and community groups.
Only after this groundwork do we propose specific technologies. And we always start with pilot programs. Small-scale deployments that prove value before major investment.
This patient approach takes longer than some competitors. But it produces systems that actually get used, that deliver measurable results, and that municipalities can sustain long-term.

Operating across Canada means understanding diverse conditions. Our systems function reliably in temperatures ranging from minus 40 to plus 35 degrees Celsius. They handle the freeze-thaw cycles that destroy poorly designed outdoor equipment.
We understand Canadian procurement processes, privacy legislation including PIPEDA, and the specific requirements of provincial and territorial governments. Our team includes members who have worked within municipal governments and understand internal dynamics.
This local knowledge makes implementation smoother. Fewer surprises. Faster deployment. Better outcomes.
